Overview of the Artisan Assistant Role

VKB Engineering Services is seeking two reliable, hardworking, and responsible individuals to support their Fitter in carrying out maintenance, inspections, and repairs across all GWK silo facilities. This role is essential to ensuring that silo operations remain safe, efficient, and fully functional throughout the agricultural season.

The position involves frequent travel to various silo sites, making it suitable for someone who is adaptable, prepared for hands-on tasks, and comfortable working in physically demanding environments. Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Artisan Assistant position, applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 or NQF Level 4.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical experience in both fields is highly beneficial.
  • Troubleshooting abilities are essential.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools such as drills, grinders, and spanners.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Able to follow safety procedures and maintain safety awareness at all times.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills in fitting, welding, fabrication, and general maintenance.
  • A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.
  • A valid trade certificate is an advantage but not compulsory.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

As an Artisan Assistant, successful candidates will support qualified artisans in a wide range of maintenance and repair activities across silo sites. Duties include:

Electrical and Mechanical Support:
Assisting with basic electrical tasks under supervision, including the use of grinders, drills, and test meters. Support may also involve cable cleaning, inspecting equipment, and maintaining electrical components during routine maintenance.

Boiler Making and Fabrication Assistance:
Helping with basic cutting, grinding, welding, and fabrication tasks where skills have been gained through training. This includes contributing to the assembly of mechanical parts and assisting in the construction of new components.

Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs:
Supporting the Fitter with preventative maintenance on silo infrastructure, including chutes, valves, structural elements, and mechanical systems. Tasks may include dismantling and reassembling parts, performing routine checks, and providing hands-on assistance during repairs.

Site Support and Travel:
Travelling with the Fitter to various GWK silo sites to provide support during routine maintenance or urgent repairs. This requires flexibility, responsibility, and readiness to work in different environments with varying demands.

Health and Safety Compliance:
Maintaining strict adherence to health and safety guidelines, ensuring safe use of tools and equipment, and completing tasks in a neat, organised manner. A clean and safe working area is essential to maintaining operational efficiency and preventing accidents.

General Maintenance and Housekeeping:
Supporting the maintenance team with daily tasks, ensuring equipment is cleaned, organised, and stored properly. Maintaining a tidy workspace and assisting with administrative duties when required.
